When A Repair Needs Attention
A shutter running unevenly, scraping in its guides or stopping before the floor needs investigation. Repeatedly operating it can turn a damaged slat or loose component into a wider mechanical problem. Stop using the door if there is uncontrolled movement, impact damage or a safety device that no longer responds.
Tell us whether the shutter is stuck open, closed or part way through its travel. Describe any unusual noise and whether a vehicle has struck the curtain or guide. These details help distinguish a mechanical obstruction from a control or supply problem before an engineer assesses the equipment.
Keep people and vehicles clear of an unsafe opening. Do not force the curtain, bypass a safety edge or attempt to release a spring or barrel. If the door creates an immediate risk, use your workplace isolation and exclusion procedures and arrange an alternative route for staff.
What The Fault Investigation Covers
A useful repair starts with the complete assembly. The curtain, end locks, guides, bottom rail, barrel, brackets and drive all interact. Replacing a visibly bent slat will not resolve a distorted guide that continues to catch the curtain during operation.
Electrical symptoms also need a measured diagnosis. A shutter that fails to move may have a supply issue, a control fault, a damaged limit setting or an activated safety circuit. Any electrical testing must be carried out by a competent person, using safe isolation where required.
For powered equipment, the inspection includes how the closing edge and other protective devices respond. A door that moves again is not automatically safe. The repair scope should identify any outstanding safety defect and whether the equipment must remain out of use.
From Fault Report To Handover
First, send the site postcode, a description of the opening and the symptoms. A manufacturer label and photographs taken from a safe position can help identify parts. Do not climb to reach a label or enter a damaged door opening to take a photograph.
Next, the condition is assessed and the proposed work is explained. You should know which components need repair or replacement, whether parts must be ordered and what access arrangements are needed. Any temporary security arrangement should be agreed separately rather than assumed.
After the agreed repair, the door needs functional and safety checks appropriate to its design. The handover should state what was repaired, any restrictions and any further work recommended. Keep the record with the door instructions and maintenance history.
Repair Or Replace?
Repair can make sense where the structure remains sound and compatible components are available. Replacement deserves consideration when the curtain, guides and drive are all heavily worn, when parts are obsolete, or when the door no longer suits the traffic using it.
Ask for the options to be compared against the same requirement. A replacement may change the available headroom, controls and electrical provision. Our commercial shutter page explains the specification questions to resolve before choosing a new system.
Safety Duties And Repair Costs
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 address door safety and maintenance. Powered doors also need an assessment of their actual hazards, including trapping and falling components. See HSE’s powered-door guidance linked below for the underlying duties.
Price depends on the fault, door size, parts availability, safe access equipment and the condition of the supporting assembly. Tell us about restricted delivery windows and permits before a visit is arranged. We do not publish a generic repair price because a motor fault and an impact-damaged curtain require different work.
If your shutter has failed repeatedly, include previous repair records with your enquiry. A recurring fault can point to an unresolved alignment issue, unsuitable duty cycle or damage elsewhere in the mechanism. The next visit should investigate the cause as well as the immediate symptom.

Roller Shutter Repair FAQs
Can A Damaged Shutter Be Repaired?
A damaged roller shutter can often be repaired when the remaining assembly is sound and compatible parts are available. The assessment must look beyond the damaged slat to the guides, barrel and drive. If the structure is distorted or the safety system needs major changes, replacement may be the more practical option.
Do You Guarantee An Immediate Repair?
Roller shutter repair timing depends on access, the fault and the availability of suitable parts. Describe whether the opening can be secured and whether deliveries are affected when you enquire. Availability and any temporary measures must be confirmed before you rely on a visit. No arrival or completion time is guaranteed by this website.
